Place of event: State Opera & Ballet Theatre, Ulaanbaatar City
The ballet was first performed in Mongolia at the Opera & Ballet Theatre, Ulaanbaatar, in 1979. Famous state honored ballerinas and ballet master such as G. Tsolmon (as Giselle), M. Od (as Albrecht), B. Saranbyamba (as Myrtha), Kh. Mungunkhulug (Hans) have been performing in the ballet since then.
The story is about a young, innocent village girl named Giselle who is in love with a man she knows only as Loys. Her love fails because the man is Albrecht in reality, a nobleman disguised as a peasant, who is betrothed to Bathilde, daughter of the Duke. Giselle discovers the truth, goes mad, and then dies.
Her undying love for Albrecht saves him from the wicked magic of vampiric ghosts of betrothed girls, who were betrayed by their lovers and died before their wedding day. At night, the ghosts take revenge on their lovers by forcing them to dance until falling to death. Though their leader, Myrtha, Queen of the ghosts, forces Albrecht to dance again and again, Giselle intervenes long enough to spare his life and allow him to survive until the dawn.
At dawn, the ghosts must return to their grave and Giselle must return as well but not before showing Albrecht that she forgives him for his treachery. The two pledge their love to each other and she returns back into her grave, but will forever be separated.
Giselle is now a wili for the rest of eternity.
